on august 25, 2001 AALIYAH and 8-others were killed in an airplane crash at marsh harbour in the bahamas after filming the music video for the single rock the boat. today we remember the lost angel of rhythm and blues who defined that genre for the 1990s and whose voice still resonates here on earth with the legacy of beautiful music she left behind for us.
AALIYAH DANA HAUGHTON was a model and an actress and a recording artist who was born in brooklyn new york in 1979 and grew up in detroit michigan. she appeared on the television show star search and performed in concert with GLADYS KNIGHT and at age-12 she was signed to JIVE RECORDS.
she released her debut album entitled AGE AINT NOTHING BUT A NUMBER in 1994 and her second album ONE IN A MILLION in 1996. in 2000 aaliyah landed her first major movie role in the adaptation of william shakespeares ROMEO AND JULIET. the movie romeo must die grossed $18.6-million dollars in its first weekend and aaliyahs hit single TRY AGAIN was released on the soundtrack.
aaliyah has sold 8.1-million albums in the united states and over 24-million records worldwide. she worked with the ISLEY BROTHERS and missy elliott and SLICK RICK and jermaine dupri and timbaland. and R. KELLY who aaliyah was allegedly illegally married to in 1994 at age-15.
the week after aaliyahs death her third studio album rose to number-1 on the billboard-200 chart. it sold 2.5-million copies in the united states and was certified double platinum by the recording industry association of america.
