AVATAR is the new 3D science fiction movie written and directed and co-produced by james cameron. the premise of the movie is that humans lead by sigourney weaver are mining the precious mineral called unobtanium and their mining colony becomes a threat to the indigenous tribe of na'vi. it is set in the year 2154 in the alpha centauri star system on the lush moon pandora.
avatar differs visually from other films but looks like a hybrid of THE SMURFS, the 1970s television mini series ROOTS, saving private ryan and every other movie sigourney weaver has ever been in . . . i guess some of the graphics were pretty cool and i give props to whoever imagined all the new tropical forest species. however the movie itself was entirely overrated and way too long to sit through once let alone multiple times as some of my twitterati have already reported doing.

the film utilized breakthrough stereoscopic filmmaking technology for 3D viewing and was budgeted around $300-million dollars with another $150-million for promotion. it broke several box office records during it release and became the highest grossing north american film of all time and worldwide and also became the first film to gross more than $2-billion dollars. avatar has been nominated for 9-academy awards including best picture and best director and james cameron has already stated that there will be a sequel.
