Place de la Concorde or Harmony Square in English is one of the major public squares in Paris and is located in the city's 8th arrondissement at the eastern end of the Champs-Elysees. Harmony Square was designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel in 1775 at which times it was filled with fountains and statues and named Place Louis XV to honor the king of that time. The Place is also occupied by a giant Egyptian obelisk in the center of the square, which is decorated with hieroglyphics. The obelisk once marked the entrance to the Luxor Temple and in 1829 the Ottoman viceroy of Egypt offered this 3,300 year old red granite column to France.
